Although some nail problems are stemmed from underlying medical conditions, proper nail care is an important factor to nail health. Problems such as ingrown toenails or fungal infections can often be prevented by properly maintaining your nails and keeping them healthy. The easiest way to care for your nails is by scheduling routine manicures and pedicures.
How do I know if my nails are healthy?
Both fingernails and toenails are supposed to be smooth and consistent in color. Getting routine manicures or pedicures can help to maintain the health of your nails. Grooves, ridges, spots, or discoloration are all signs of unhealthy nails. If you notice signs of unhealthy nails, be sure to ask your nail tech for information on how to get your nails back into a healthy state.
It is recommended to schedule a manicure and a pedicure every two weeks. Between appointments, you can help keep your nails stay healthy by doing the following:
- Keep nails clean- Soaking your hands and feet in warm soapy water can help maintain the cleanliness of your nails. Small nail brushes help to get dirt and germs from around your nails as well as under your nails. It is important to keep your nails clean to reduce the risk of infection caused by lingering dirt or germs.
- Keep nails trimmed- For easy trimming, soak hands or feet prior to using nail scissors or clippers. Or, you may prefer trim your nails after a shower or a bath. Either way, this can help with trimming thick nails that may crack or be brittle if they were trimmed while dry. Be sure not to trim your nails too low, as this can expose the nail pad and increase the chance of infection.
- Keep nails moisturized- When you apply lotion to your hands and feet, be sure to rub it in to your nails and cuticles as well. This will help keep your nails and cuticles moist, reducing peeling or cracking of the cuticles.
- Protect your nails- When performing dirty jobs, such as gardening be sure to wear gloves. This will help keep dirt from getting under your nails or in the nail folds. Harsh chemicals or soaps also can cause damage to your nails when used for long periods of time. It is important to wear rubber gloves when using such products to keep your nails healthy.
